The task

LSE was founded in 1895 and has grown to become one of the foremost social science universities in the world. A specialist university with an international intake, LSE's reach extends from its central London campus to 140 countries around the world making it a truly global organisation.

The site was required to house and promote nearly 100 of the institution’s top research case studies, many with pan- European or global influence. The existing LSE website did not have the visual or functional flexibility to deliver on the brief, so we designed a brand new microsite that would be embedded into the main online presence.

Our approach

We were engaged to develop the strategy, user experience and design of the project and then liaised directly with LSE’s contracted technical partner to deliver the final site build and launch.

We were supplied with a hugely diverse range of case study topics, including papers related to economics, medicine, transport and productivity. We quickly recognised that there were common themes and connections that could be made between the papers. We segmented them accordingly enabling the user to easily access documents related to their interests, with the added option of filters to further narrow the search.

Everything we do at Grandad is in accordance with branding and the brand guidelines given to us. For this project we followed the theme of the rest of the site, but gave the microsite a modernised look and feel with the use of blocks and more eye-catching methods of content presentation.

The result

The site launched in December 2014 and has been applauded both internally and across the industry. Search rankings have improved by over 200% and our user experience approach is having a large influence over the current redevelopment of the entire LSE site.
