The task

Founded in 1949, ArtReview is one of the world’s leading international contemporary art magazines, dedicated to expanding contemporary arts audience and reach.

The challenge given to us was to combine a number of websites that ArtReview had built up over the years into an all-encompassing, innovative and responsive art portal. We also aimed to improve functionality and modernise the design.

Art Review Homepage Art Review Archive

Our approach

One of the main issues with ArtReview’s old site was that content had been added gradually over time with no real strategy in place, leading to multiple websites with poorly arranged content and a confusing UX. Therefore one of the key aims of this project was to design an all-encompassing site that reflected the cutting edge and innovative nature of ArtReview, whilst ensuring users were able to seamlessly navigate the sites content.

By addressing the information hierarchy from a sitemap perspective as well as on a page content level we were able to achieve this. Through extensive collaboration with ArtReview we came up with a clean, simple yet effective visual design that we both felt accurately reflected the brand.

The use of YouCreate, our own CMS and the custom built blocks utilised by the system solved a number of issues related to the structure and presentation of content. As well as solving structural issues YouCreate offers ArtReview a significantly more efficient and flexible way to add content, an essential requirement as the site needs to be updated frequently due to the consistently changing nature of the art world.

ArtReview have been producing content since 1949. In order to present existing content in a way that is searchable and easily accessible for the user, we created a digital archive of ArtReview and ArtReview Asia, from 2006 to the present day.

The purpose of the archive is to provide a digital solution for the back-catalogue of magazine content, giving the user the option to use drop down menus to filter by year, magazine, focus and date.

To ensure that all of the content added by ArtReview internally continues to improve their visibility online, we gave a number of ArtReview’s staff training on SEO fundamentals to ensure future content is as search engine friendly as possible.

Art Review Pages on Mobile Screens

The result

The end result not only beautifully complements ArtReview’s offline activities but also has the ability to be a standalone art portal for those who prefer digital, to physical media.

The publisher has seen a 50%+ increase in returning visitors helping to build them significant online equity and in turn to drive online revenue. Our collaboration continues to this day and we aim to continue the good work we have done so far.
